(1/01/12) Penn-Del Ham-in-a-Day Class Scheduled for February 23
Penn-Del Amateur Radio Club will be sponsoring another installment in the extremely successful Ham-in-a-Day Amateur Radio Technician licensing class on February 23rd. The class will begin at 0800 hours at Maximillian's Restaurant located at 3001 Naamans Creek Road in Boothwyn, PA. The class will prepare students for taking the entry level Technician license exam which will be administered at the conclusion of the all-day class. (12/25/12) NBEMS Training Session Scheduled for February 9
A training session on Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software will be presented at the Delaware County EOC on Saturday, February 9th at 0900 hours. NBEMS is a digital system for transmitting and receiving text messages on UHF and VHF frequencies utilizing the sound card of a laptop or other computer. The ARRL has adopted NBEMS for use by ARES to offer a quick and efficient method of sending text messages without the need for interfaces or other expensive equipment. The presenter for this invaluable training will be Joe Vilardo, K3JV, Chester County Emergency Coordinator.
(7/12/12) Ham-In-A-Day Class Scheduled for August 18 at Delaware Co. 911 Center
The next scheduled session of the very successful Ham-in-a-Day class administered by the Penn-Del Amateur Radio Club will be Saturday, August 18 at 0800 hours. (2/20/12) Training Seminar Scheduled for March 31, 1000 Hours at EOC
Delaware County ARES-RACES will present a multi-faceted training seminar at the EOC in Lima on Saturday, March 31 at 1000 hours. The seminar will include modules on traffic handling with an historical overview of this critically important aspect of Amateur Radio and details on using the ARRL Radiogram and ICS-213 form. Other modules will include Winlink in emergency communication, portable power supplies for emcomm, antennas for emcomm and D-Star. Presenters will include Joe Ames, W3JY, an expert in traffic handling and Bob Wilson, W3BIG, Delaware County EC. (08/19/11) PHL Airport EPEX Emergency Preparedness Exercise, Saturday, October 29
Delaware County ARES-RACES will provide the lead role in the auxiliary emergency communications response for the important PHL Airport Emergency Preparedness Exercise scheduled for Saturday, October 29 at 1000 hours. The exercise is a test of municipal, county and federal response to a simulated air disaster at PHL Airport. Delaware County ARES-RACES will coordinate the Amateur Radio response to the drill and provide the lion's share of volunteer operators who will man patient transport buses, a large net control station at the airport and the ramp control tower. It is anticipated that a team of approximately 20 radio operators will participate in the exercise.
(06/02/11) Delaware County PODEX - Communications Exercise, Wednesday, June 8
Delaware County ARES-RACES will provide primary voice communications for a county-wide communications exercise on June 8. The drill will test communications from the EOC in Lima to various POD (Points of Dispensing) sites throughout Delaware County. PODs are established at schools, hospitals and other municipal facilities when mass inoculation or medication of a population is required during a wide-scale public health crisis. A team of approximately 10 radio operators will participate in the exercise coordinated by the Delaware County Department of Emergency Services.

A Basic Skywarn class with emphasis on Winter reporting will be held at the Delaware County 911 Center on Tuesday evening, January 11 at 1900 hours (7:00 p.m.). The course will be presented by a staff meteorologist from the National Weather Service and is sponsored by Delaware County Skywarn. (09/28/10) Penn-Del ARC Ham-in-a-Day Course Scheduled for October 16
The next session of the very successful Ham-in-a-Day course, sponsored by Penn-Del Amateur Radio Club, will be presented at 0800 hours Saturday, October 16 at Maximillians Restaurant located at 3001 Naamans Creek Road in Boothwyn, PA. The course will be taught by Hal Frantz, KA3TWG. Hal has a phenomenal success rate and is responsible for introducing scores of people to the world of Amateur Radio and helping them to pass the Technician Class license exam. (09/21/10) Simulated Emergency Test (SET) Scheduled for October 2
Delaware County ARES-RACES will conduct a Simulated Emergency Test on the afternoon of Saturday, October 2, 2010 at various sites within Delaware County. The SET will test the capability of the unit to respond to a critical emergency, deploying personnel and communications assets to various sites within the county. The drill will test notification via the alert system, activation, deployment and communications performance in an exercise that will simulate an explosion and fire similar to the actual emergency that took place in Collingdale on September 2nd. (05/19/10) Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Drill June 21 / 22
Delaware County ARES-RACES will participate in the county-wide SNS drill scheduled for June 21 and 22. The exercise will test the ability of state, county and municipal agencies to respond to a critical health emergency and deliver vaccines with which to immunize residents. The scenario this year is a medical response to a simulated anthrax outbreak. Delaware County ARES-RACES will support the drill by providing backup communications at four locations including the operations center at DCIU, the logistics delivery center at Fair Acres, a POD unit at Academy Park High School and the EOC in Lima. Communications will include primary and secondary voice channels and radio email via Winlink.
(04/30/10) Field Day at Ridley Creek State Park - June 26 / 27
Delaware County ARES-RACES will again hold Field Day at Ridley Creek State Park on the weekend of June 26 / 27. Operations will be centered in Area 12, accessed from Sandy Flash Drive. The station will be a Class 2A operating on emergency power using battery arrays and a 5 KW gasoline generator. HF antennas will include a G5RV, NVIS 75-meter dipole and long-wire. (03/31/10) ARES-RACES / Penn-Del ARC Joint Meeting May 4, 2010
The first Delaware County ARES-RACES meeting of 2010 will be a joint venture with the Penn-Del ARC on Tuesday evening, May 4th at 1930 hours. The meeting will be held at Maximillians Restaurant located at 3001 Naamans Creek Road in Boothwyn, PA. The meeting will include a program featuring an overview of ARES-RACES operations and will include a show and tell of new equipment provided by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Counter-Terrorism Task Force.
(03/16/10) March of Dimes and MS Walks Scheduled for April 24/25
The two largest public service events, for which Delaware County ARES-RACES provides communications support, are scheduled for the same weekend this year. The March of Dimes Walk will take place at Ridley Creek State Park on Saturday, April 24 and the MS Walk will be held the day after on Sunday, April 25. We are anticipating another enjoyable and satisfying outing and need your participation. ARES-RACES volunteers will report at the staging area in the parking lot for Area 11 at 0800 hours. (01/23/10) Ham-in-a-Day Class Scheduled for Saturday, March 27
The next Ham-in-Day licensing course, sponsored by the Penn-Del Amateur Radio Club, is scheduled for Saturday, March 27th from 0830-1730. The course is an excellent way to break into the exciting Amateur Radio hobby. The class is taught by Hal Frantz, KA3TWG, who has a phenomenal success rate in licensing new Amateur Radio operators. The class will be held at Maximillians located at 3001 Naamans Creek Road in Boothwyn, PA. A $40 course fee includes instruction, morning refreshments and the license exam fee.
